Negative Credit Impact

So you messed up 4 years ago and got yourself in a credit bind how long is it going to impact your credit? You can check the expiration dates on accounts in your credit report. However sometimes they have been re-activated or listed inaccurately below is the basic outline of how long a negative mark will impact your credit.

Tax Liens
City
, county, state, and federal tax liens are particularly harmful and can remain on your credit report forever. However, if you pay the lien the account will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the payment date.

Bankruptcy
Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcies remain on your credit report for 10 years after the filing date. Chapter 13 bankruptcy records can be removed after 7 years from the filing date based on the credit reporting agencies policy. You will also want to make sure that the items in your bankruptcy are listed as “included in bk” and should fall off at the same time as the bankruptcy.

Judgments
Most judgments, including small claims, civil, and child support, will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the filing date.

Charge-off accounts
Charged-off accounts will stay on your credit report for 7 years from the first date of delinquency.

Collection accounts
Collection accounts will stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the last 180-day late payment. The record will be marked as "paid collection" should you choose to pay the entire balance. If you settle with the collections agency for a reduced amount it will report as "paid for less than the total due."

Late payments
Late pays report 30, 60, 90, 120,180 days late these delinquencies can stay on your credit report for 7 years.

Closed accounts
If the account has delinquencies, those marks will stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date they were reported. Positive closed accounts (with no delinquencies or late payments) can remain on your credit report for longer than 7 years.

Hard Inquiries
Hard inquiries stay on your report for up to two years.
